About
Sentinel
To assist disadvantaged Native Alaskans, Congress
abandoned the reservation system used elsewhere in
the United States and enacted the Alaska Native Claims
Settlement Act (ANCSA). This 1971 Act established
a system of corporate ownership of assets that provides
for the long term financial independence of Native
Alaskans. The corporations that ANCSA authorized are
called Alaskan Native Corporations. Sentinel is a
subsidiary of MTNT, Ltd., an ANC established in 1976
as a consolidation of four village corporations, McGrath,
Takotna,
Nikolai
and Telida.
The shareholders are descendents of the Athabascan
people.
MTNTs headquarters are in McGrath, Alaska, just
west of Denali, the Athabascan name for Mt. McKinley.
MTNT, through its subsidiaries such as Sentinel, seeks
to improve its Alaskan Native shareholders standard
of living by providing employment, dividend income,
land for homesteading, scholarships for college and
other vocational schools, and other learning programs
for its shareholders, many of whom live in rural communities.
The Act gives ANC firms special
status with regard to the SBA 8(a) program. ANC firms
may have subsidiary companies eligible for the SBAs
8(a) program. ANC 8(a) firms, such as Sentinel, may
receive sole source contracts of unlimited dollar
amounts. This benefit reflects the reality that MTNT
and Sentinel, its subsidiary, work on behalf of many
disadvantaged individuals, not just one owner, as
is the case with other disadvantaged firms.
